I am a long-term member of several consumer cooperatives, and I believe strongly in the cooperative enterprise model. I work as a watershed planning consultant in the Milwaukee area and I have a farmstead in Shawano, where I grew up. I served for ten years on the board of Outpost Natural Foods Cooperative, one of the largest grocery cooperatives in the U.S. There I received education and gained experience in a wide range of cooperative governance matters, including cooperative finances, strategic policy planning, member involvement, monitoring organizational performance, and board-management relations. As board president, I effectively facilitated consensus decision processes and member communication, and helped lead the organization through a period of significant market
uncertainty. A career in banking gave me experience in procedural, compliance, financial, and technical matters in a highly-regulated industry. I have graduate degrees in planning, administration, and policy, and I serve as board treasurer for the non-profit Milwaukee Bicycle Collective.
It is truly wonderful that we have a cooperative option for health insurance, and it is critical that we maintain affordable and high-quality options for members, especially during times of regulatory and policy uncertainty. As a self-employed consultant, I am keenly aware of the value (and rarity) of marketplace insurance options that are member-driven. I fully support Common Ground Healthcare’s mission to provide mutual benefit through fairly-priced and understandable health plans informed by shared cooperative goals. It would be an honor to apply my education, experience, and dedication to cooperative principles to serve Common Ground Healthcare Cooperative and its members.
